The Impact of Unexpected
Our Story
While motherhood is full of happy moments, the work of motherhood is multiplied tenfold when mothers have financial burdens and/or lack a support system.
Unexpected is a non-profit organization that was formed to aid mothers who are in need of more than just physical supplies. We take the saying “it takes a village to raise a child” very literally and want to be a utilized resource for those that may not have the support system that they will desperately need as a new mom.
Founded in 2018, Unexpected NC is a non-profit organization that supports low-income, young, single mothers who are caring for young children. Unexpected NC grew from a need within the surrounding community to fill the gaps in the service sector. While young mothers can benefit from other programs such as WIC, there are few programs that provide skill building classes, emergency supplies, and promote a non-traditional support system among mothers alike. Unexpected NC provides supplemental support to strengthen existing programs by providing direct support to the women who need it most.

100% of donations go directly to mothers and children in need.
Since its recent inception, Unexpected NC has had an impact on the women of Wake and Durham Counties in North Carolina. Within its first year, Unexpected NC has collected over 963 diapers, 1,752 wipes, 576 pieces of clothing, and hundreds of other basic necessities for young children. Of those donated, 481 diapers, 1,041 wipes, 248 pieces of clothing and countless other basic need items have been donated to 27 women and children in need. We have hosted Mommy-and-Me networking events, community conversations, and a supply drive. We are continuing to build our community partnerships and collaborations and have received support from Duck Donuts (Cary), the Notasium (Cary), Publix, Costco and Snickerdoodles Play Cafe (Raleigh).
